Open Rated Chess Tournaments:  These are
tournaments that are played based on the players
Chess Rating and Not their School grade. This allows
newer players a chance to perform at a better level
playing players of equal or lesser rating. We encourage
all players to attend these tournaments to strengthen
their playing ability and allow for achievement. Yes, it is
true your young player may have to play an older
player or Adult However, they are all at the same rating
level or Below.

Scholastic Chess Tournaments: These are
tournaments that are held according to your players
school grade. These are fine for schools with large
teams. But, they do not take in to account the playing
ablility of each individual player. A new 4th Grade
Player may have to play against other 4th graders or up
to 6th graders who may have been playing for 6 to 8
years. The players tend to not do well and get
discouraged and eventually leave chess.

The South Texas Chess Center: Encourages all
players to play as many events as possible to help
build a solid chess playing base. Players of all ages
attend to help brush up on chess subjects and tactics
and rules.
We also, believe every chess players is a Winner!
Chess Tips for Parents:

  • Always check websites for updated information on Chess Tournaments.

  • Insure that Boards and sets will be provided before leaving for the tournament.

  • " Bring your Own Equipment" should be posted otherwise.

  • Check early registration fees and deadlines this can save you a lot of money and
    Heartache! or Headaches!

  • Insure your children rest the night before. If you are driving to the playing site from out
    of town make them as comfortable as possible for the trip.

  • Check-in as soon as possible when you arrive and give your players small snacks
    before they play not a BIG! breakfast. Make sure they eat small meals or snacks all
    day until the event is over. Pizza and Heavy foods will cause them to lose
    concentration during the rounds and cause problems during the matches.

  • Keep up with the Wall Charts insure proper divisions and sections. Always check the
    points your players have at report any problems as soon as possible!

  • The day will be long prepare for a trying day in hallways and courtyards. Bring your
    own comfortable chairs and lots of reading materials make the day as productive as
    possible for you.

  • Support your child through all the wins and Learning experiences (Losses) throughout
    the day.
